Some golfers consider the hook in golf as one of the most dreadful movements you can make. In short, it can make the ball go in a direction you don’t want it to. There are times little elements contributing to your swing motion can affect how the club head comes into contact with the ball. The good news is there are a few little things that can make a big difference in how you make your swing. You can do some practice drills to help you understand how to position your body including your hands, arms and shoulders. Here are three tips to help you cure your hook on and off the golf course.

  1. Watch how you let your torso rotate. When you make your swing you should rotate your torso toward your target. This means your chest and hips should rotate as you swing through. You can practice this motion a few times to get the feel of it as it may be difficult for some to get used to. Some may argue that you don’t have to turn your torso as much, but you can still practice the motion in getting your club to travel on a smooth plane to reduce the risk of a hook.
  2. Watch how you grip your club before you start your shot. Some golfers like to make a “T” with the palm of their right hand and the thumb of the left. This helps alleviate some pressure that occurs during the swing. In other words, it helps control the weight of the club as you move in to make contact. If you can maintain this setup when you hit the ball it can help reduce the risk of the dreaded hook.
  3. Make sure you keep your club head open. If you close it too soon when you come in to hit the ball you end up creating a hook. Instead, pay attention to how you swing your club and the position it should be in by the time you make contact with the ball. As you swing down you can move your body down slightly by bending your knee, and keeping your other leg straight. This ensures your club head will stay open and make necessary contact with the ball as you continue to swing forward and up.
